Some very enthusiastic reviews from friends. I picked up Double Date by Rosamund du Jardin and started reeading with a wee bit of apprehension. And then enjoying it just flies right out the window. One of the curses of being a historian is you can never look at certain kinds of historical fiction without a very cynical eye. Or maybe it’s just because I wonder about all the things they’re leaving out. (Yes, I mixed my beverage metaphors on purpose.) Maybe it’s because I only like fluffy romances of any kind in small doses. “Malt shop” books usually aren’t my cup of tea. ![]()

His heroine in The Rainbow, Ursula Brangwen, sees her boyfriend (to whom she is engaged but doesn’t marry) naked while he is bathing, sleeps with him in his hotel room while pretending to be his wife, and has outdoor sex with him. Lawrence only suggests that his characters engage in sexual activity. The Rainbow seems very mild by today’s standards. All the rules, all the taboos, seem to have been lifted, and nothing is sacred anymore. We live in a permissive age where any words might be spoken for public consumption anything might be seen on TV or in movies or written about in magazines, newspapers and books. Readers nowadays will not understand what all the fuss was about when The Rainbow was first published nearly a hundred years ago. It wasn’t available in England and the United States for many years after its publication, except in an “expurgated” version, meaning that somebody went through the book and took out the parts they considered “offensive.” ![]() The book was banned in many quarters while the righteous of the day took great pleasure in making a public display of burning it. His later works included poetry and short story collections and novellas. In 1969 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Overall this plot was fun and kept the reader engaged. If you do read them out of order it does not really inhibit your understanding of the current book but some of the references may not make much sense in bits. Plot - I would recommend reading this series in order as characters from one often pop up in later novels. None of the characters were unbelievable, but somehow the Jefferson's seem to fall a little flat for me. Miss Marple was developed a bit more, but the primary focus was on the characteristics of the Jefferson family and the Bantry's. The characters were interesting on the whole for this book. ![]() Characters - This was Christie's second installment in the Miss Marple series and picks up some time after the first. ![]() I found it to be suitable for the book, there was just something about it which I did not love but I cannot quite put my finger on what it was. I was not loving it, but I did not hate it.
